It is the introduction scene of Rei in EVA. I have not read the whole series
yet and I do not know how to translate this boy's name. However, he gave
me a very bad impression. The saturation here was simple. An alien robot
was attacking Tokyo, the last hope for humanity was a giant robot drive
by a 14-year-old girl Rei, and she was greatly injured in her first battle.
This boy was the only one who can replace her to face the enemy. He refused at first because he hated his father who spends all his life to build that robot and never took care of him. His father then ordered the injured Rei to reenter the battle field. Although Rei was obviously in great pain, she did not question the order and she struggling to get up.
Up to this point, any warm blooded male would have no choice but to takes
her place and fight. How did our hero react to all these? He still hesitated,
and needed further persuasion from his aunt(44 panels later). What a loser.
In contrast, Rei's bravery was actually more close to normal people's reaction
to crisis. Heroine vs. coward, the contrast could not be more clear.
